In this Clinical Services Journal article, the topic of innovative decontamination efforts and hand hygiene tools are reviewed to show how they have helped hospitals raise infection control standards during the pandemic. Hospitals across the world saw cases rise while also dealing with unique challenges, whether PPE shortages, supply and staff issues, or finding effective methods for eliminating the SARS-CoV-2 virus from patient areas.
Hospitals in the UK were discovering that hand hygiene compliance was more important than ever in protecting patients and their staff. ICUs, which were seeing high levels of activity, were discovered to host lower hand hygiene compliance than other areas of the hospital. Additional concerns centered around eliminating the environment as a source of infection due to the high transmission rate of SARS-CoV-2 and its ability to survive on surfaces for days.
