The legalization of cannabis has driven the expansion of commercial cannabis farming within the United States since 2012. With the price of legally produced cannabis around the $1500 to $3000 USD per pound (Cannabis Benchmarks, 2018) both new and traditional farmers are developing growing facilities for this high value crop.
Commercial cannabis crops are susceptible to deterioration and loss due to contamination with microbiological organisms such as molds, fungi, etc. This contamination can cause both commercial loss and present infection risks to users of the product itself, particularly immunocompromised individuals.
A new pilot study overviews how Bioquell automated hydrogen peroxide vapor technology can prevent and eliminate these contaminants in order to create aseptic operating environments. The study was conducted in an Oregon based commercial cannabis growing facility where three areas were identified, two grow rooms and a processing warehouse. Upon conclusion of the study, there is an indication that 35% hydrogen peroxide vapor may be a viable decontamination solution for the control and removal of contaminating microbiological pathogens from cannabis growing facilities.
